With this new project I've decided to bring back my old blog. The old posts are about my ice skating tours with Disney On Ice in 2011–2014. At that time skating was the important thing and my engagement with Classics took a back seat. Now it's the other way around. I teach Latin, do research and skate as a hobby every now and then.
The news right now is that I've been accepted into a PhD program at the University of Turku. I've just started so there's not much to tell yet except the topic of my research, which is Roman insults in the poems of Martial and Pompeian graffiti. I'll tell you more about my research plan in another post. Right now I'm writing applications for funding and waiting to hear back from previous applications. The PhD program requires me to take classes so I'm studying research ethics, science communication and methods this fall among other things. Since I always like to learn something new and I also took a course in corpus linguistics, even though I don't know if it's going to benefit my research. When you've been away from the University for a year, it feels good to be able to pick and choose something just because it's interesting.
In this blog I intend to write about my research, my thoughts about the project and probably about whole lot of other stuff. I write mainly for myself so that I can look back later and see how everything developed and where it led me. I decided to do it in the form of a blog so that those interested in this project can follow my progress. Starting a PhD has been a long process and much thought has gone into it long before I started my research. I'll tell you more about that process and how I got to this point some other time.
